Covid Vaccination Programme Rollout ( posted on Jan 11, 2021 )

Following extensive trials, the first safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine has been approved in the UK and is now available to priority groups.


Vaccinations are being delivered according to priority groups identified by the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). The vaccinations may not take place at your GP practice, but rather a local vaccination service (led by GPs, practice nurses and community pharmacists) who are responsible for delivering the vaccine to people in your community.


When it is the right time for you to receive your vaccination, you will receive an invitation to come forward. This may be via the phone, or through a letter either from ourselves or the national booking system.


We know lots of people will be eager to get protected but we are asking people not to contact us to get an appointment as you will not be able to get one until you are contacted.

We are getting a lot of enquiries regarding the covid vaccine, please DO NOT telephone the surgery regarding the vaccine as this disrupts the flow of urgent telephone calls.


Information to patients regarding Covid vaccine:


Who will get the Covid vaccine first?

The exact order in which a Covid vaccine will be distributed is yet to be confirmed, and will depend on which vaccines will be available, subject to them passing regulatory checks.

However, interim guidance published by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation says that care home residents and staff will be the first priority, followed by the over 80s and health and social care workers.


The vaccine will then be made available to people in 5-year age bands, from the over 75s to over 50s, with the oldest as the highest priority.

Phlebotomy service at The Beeches has been suspended ( posted on Oct 29, 2020 )


The in-house phlebotomy service at The Beeches Medical Centre has been temporarily suspended due to circumstances beyond our control.  This service is provided by Whiston hospital and they have had to withdraw this service due to staff sickness during the Covid crisis.


Where can patients have their bloods done now?


Whiston Hospital  - Monday - Friday 8am - 16.45  -  no appointment necessary -       tel 426 1600


St Helens hospital  - Wednesday Thursday Friday  - 8am - 17.00 no appointment necessary - tel 01744 646 080


Highfield - Highfield Road Widnes  - 8am - 11am - No appointment necessary (go to rear car park,  phlebotomy service will be signposted)

FLU VACCINATIONS ( posted on Sep 3, 2020 )

Flu vaccination appointments are now available to book on line using Patient Access and by telephone.


Flu vaccination clinics will commence  Monday 28.9.20


Please come alone to your appointment and wearing a face covering.


Eligible groups for vaccine are:-

  1. Patients 65 years and over
  2. Patients 6 months to 65 years in clinical at risk groups
  3. Carers
  4. Pregnant women
  5. Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals

Please do not make an appointment if you are in the 50 to 64 year old age group with no underlying conditions.  Vaccines may be available for this cohort of patients depending on flu vaccine availability and further guidelines.


Nasal flu vaccines will also be available for children age 2- 3  years of age by 31.8.20


Please stick to your appointment time as waiting capacity is limited to 10 patients only.


Please do not ask the practice nurse for any other procedure as time is limited to 7 minute slots.

Patient masks when visiting surgery ( posted on Jun 12, 2020 )


From Monday 15. 6. 2020 government guidelines state that patients need to wear a face covering or mask when visiting their surgery.


Patients who cannot tolerate a face covering e.g. asthma or those with a respiratory condition will be exempt from wearing a face covering.


When coming in to the surgery for any reason, or for an appointment, please ensure that you are wearing a face covering.  Masks will not be provided by the practice.

Patient care during the Coronavirus pandemic ( posted on May 6, 2020 )


During the coronavirus we will be triaging all patients.  This will mean that patients will be asked questions by the reception staff as first point of contact.  The patient will then be placed on a triage list and a doctor will then ring the patient back at an appointmented time, so that the patient will know when the doctor will ring to discuss the different options for the patient.


During the pandemic the practice nurses are working normally and in much the same way as the doctors via triage.

If you have symptoms of either a high temperature or a new, continuous cough then please DO NOT visit the GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital, even if you have a planned appointment

Prescription requests no longer accepted via email or telephone ( posted on Jan 9, 2020 )

We no longer take prescription requests via email from patients.


Q. How do I get my medication?

A.  Register for Patient access


Please register for patient access by following the following link https://www.patientaccess.com/  Alternatively you can come in to the practice and one of our reception staff will help you to register.  You will find this a much more convenient prescription request service once you register, as your prescription will be sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy,  where you can then collect your requested medication.

Q.  How else can I get my prescription?

Please make an appointment with our practice nurse if you are overdue your smear test.


You can also have a smear test at Widnes HCRC Sexual Health Clinic on:-


Monday - Thursday -  5.30pm - 7.30pm


Saturday - 12.30pm - 2.30pm


These are convenient appointment times for for working mums or those who have children to look after during the day.


Whilst no appointment is necessary it is best to call first to check that there is a nurse available that day.

If you need to be seen by a doctor when we are closed at weekends you can be seen by a doctor at GP Extra at Widnes HCRC.

Changes in repeat prescription ordering from November 2017 ( posted on Jun 5, 2017 )

Sign up to on line access today and order your own repeat prescriptions and book an appointment on line. 

Prior Notification for Patients

Your pharmacist will no longer be able to order a prescription on your behalf from November 2017

Currently patients have access to the Repeat prescribing System from their local pharmacies, this involves the pharmacy of choice ordering the monthly medications for the patient.


As from November 2017 this service will cease. Patients who use this service are now encouraged to order their own medications. They can still have the prescription sent electronically to the pharmacy.


Letters will be sent out out on 1.10.17 on our behalf from Medicines Management explaining the process to patients.  


Any patients who are unable to order their own medications for any reason or do not have someone who can do it for them will be managed by the surgery.


These changes will not affect patients who have blister packs.



Why not order your own prescriptions on line?


A receptionist will be pleased to help you register for this service.  You have no need to collect the prescription as it can be sent electronically to your nominated pharmcacy and they can still deliver as before.

A New Musculoskeletal service has been launched on 3rd April 2017.  Patients no longer need to visit a GP to be referred. 


Patients can book a 10 minute slot by ringing 0151 495 5472 to discuss their symptoms .  A physiotherapy practitioner can then give patients options on the best way forward.

From 31st March 2016 you can view you medical record on line in addition to ordering your repeat prescriptions and booking appointments on line.


If you would like this service then please bring two forms of identification to the practice e.g. passport or driver's licence and a utility bill confirming your address.  We will be happy to set this up for you.

Evening and weekend appointments


You can now book an evening or weekend routine appointment at the Beeches Medical Centre to be seen at Widnes HCRC.  The new system is known as "GPEXTRA".


Times that patients can have appointments are:-    Monday to Friday - 6.30pm - 9pm

                                                                                 Saturday 9.30am - 12.00 and 12.30  - 3.30pm

                                                                                 Sunday   9.30am  - 12.00 and 12.30 - 3.30pm


If you cannot keep your appointment then you will need to cancel it by contacting

HCRC on 0151 495 5000, not the practice as we do not have the facility to cancel appointments


We hope this will be beneficial for patients who cannot be seen during the day in the week, perhaps due to work or carer responsibilities.

Patients can now cancel an appointment by TEXT message ( posted on Nov 26, 2015 )

We have a new TEXT messaging service whereby we can remind patients of their appointments and if no longer needed the patient can cancel by texting back  CANCEL  to us.


We can also send patients a TEXT reminder for a review or flu vaccination.


If we need to cancel your appointment we can also inform you by TEXT.


Texting relies on the practice having an up to date mobile telephone number.  We would be grateful if you could let a receptionist know if you change your mobile number.

We have a facility for our patients to send text messaging 48 hours before their booked appointments as a reminder.  All registered patients will be enabled for this service as a default setting, providing we have an up to date mobile number on the patient record.


If you need to update your mobile number then please email Beechesmc@haltongp.nhs.uk with your updated mobile number or you can use the "update your records" tab on the home page and complete the update form.


If you do not wish to be reminded of your appointment and wish to opt out of this service then please email the practice manager using the email address as above, or telephone the surgery or alternatively inform a receptionist when booking your appointment.
